Alfred Wallis biography

THE BIOGRAPHY OF ALFRED WALLIS (1855-1942)

ALFRED WALLIS is one of our best-loved artists. His life at sea began at 9 as a cabin boy, followed by spells as an inshore fisherman around the coast of Britain and as a merchant mariner sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. He ran a 'rag & bone' stores at St Ives for many years, and when he was 70 taught himself to paint. He painted the ships he sailed on through great storms at sea, and many of his other memories of a vanished past. To truly understand his paintings it essential to understand his life, and this richly illustrated biography offers many new insights to do just that.
