I wrote The Ship's Kitten after I discovered an abandoned kitten on a remote stretch of seashore around the island where I lived. She was thin and poorly and needed lots of care. But soon she was well again and she became my constant companion, sitting on my shoulder when I went for walks down by the sea. I lived near a harbour full of colourful boats and a ferry that sailed to and from the mainland. Given this setting the story really just wrote itself.
