Carousel - The Guide to Children's Books

(March 14, 2009)

A kitten, abandoned on a stormy night in a rain-lashed port, goes in search of warmth and comfort. She tries again and again to find a position as a ship's cat but every craft she boards seems to have one already and they're not at all sympathetic to her plight. The final solution to this dilemma is surprising: the moody black and white illustrations provide the right balance to the text and the cats are wonderfully portrayed in both word and picture, each with its own personality. Dark enough to be compelling without being scary, literary enough to be satisfying without being hard to read, this little book deserves to be successful.
