ALFRED WALLIS (1855-1942)

Alfred Wallis From Child Pauper To Artistic Luminary

Alfred Wallis is one of our best-loved artists. He spent his early working life as a cabin boy, an inshore fisherman, and as part of the crew on sailing schooners trading cod across the Atlantic. He then ran a marine stores business at St Ives for many years, and when he was 70 taught himself to paint to pass the time. He often depicted autobiographical events close to his heart, such as the ships he had sailed on as they battled ferocious storms at sea. To truly understand his paintings it is essential to understand his life, and this meticulously researched biography by Matilda Webb offers rich new insights to do just that.
